  1. You shouldn’t spend more than 30 percent of your gross annual income.
  2. You should have 30 percent of the cost of the home saved for a down payment.
  3. Or you should cap your budget for a new home at 3 times your annual gross income.

Just because you CAN afford a certain amount, doesn’t mean you should.  This is because as a home owner you are financially responsible for much more than rent.
